Spanish and wire reports confirm this crash, but the toll has been rising all day, so treat the post's 46 as the latest figure I found, not a final count. Around 8:54 a.m. local time, a Renfe AVE on the Madrid–Seville line struck the rear of a stopped Iryo train between Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo province. Castilla-La Mancha officials first said at least 10 had died, then at least 30 with about 80 injured. By midday, Spanish media were reporting at least 46 dead and more than 170 injured. AP's report, carried by CTV gives the early account, and Mappr's map of the crash has the timeline and the midday figures.
ADIF suspended high-speed traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia. The cause is not yet known, and officials have said it's too early to say. It's Spain's second deadly rail disaster this year, after the January derailment at Adamuz, which killed about 45 to 46 people depending on the count. For the official toll and any findings, follow the Castilla-La Mancha government and ADIF, since the figures are still provisional.
