Whether this counts as an improvement depends on what you value, but the changes themselves are well documented. In 2025 In-N-Out confirmed, through owner Lynsi Snyder, that Yellow 5 and Red 40 were removed from pickles, chilies, the house spread, strawberry shakes and pink lemonade, replaced with turmeric, beta carotene and vegetable juice. High-fructose corn syrup was swapped for natural sugar in several items, and artificial vanilla and flavors were replaced with natural ones (see the Yahoo News report on Snyder's statement). The meme's claims need checking: I found no company statement that Red 3 was replaced in the burger line, and the ketchup change was described as a transition still underway. In early September 2026 the chain also said it had replaced iodized salt packets with sea salt, which KTLA and FOX Business reported. The Mayo Clinic notes sea salt has essentially the same basic nutritional value as table salt, and iodized salt has long helped prevent iodine deficiency, so that switch is the one people are arguing about. Whether dye and sweetener swaps make the food better is a fair debate; the swap itself is the company's stated choice, not a health result. Does anyone have a sense of how the new recipes taste compared with the old ones?
