Regular pre-market trading doesn't happen on Sunday. The standard US pre-market session (4:00 to 9:30 a.m. ET) runs Monday through Friday only.
Sunday evening is a different story:
- Index futures open at 6:00 p.m. ET Sunday (5:00 p.m. Central). Schwab's guide says this is when S&P 500 futures start trading.
- Overnight stock trading runs through brokers and alternative trading systems. Interactive Brokers and Robinhood start at 8:00 p.m. ET Sunday, and Blue Ocean's session runs 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, Sunday through Thursday, according to Forbes (October 12, 2026).
For you in Chicago, it's 7:22 p.m. Central now, which is 8:22 p.m. Eastern. So the overnight venues have just opened for the week, and futures have been trading since 5:00 p.m. Central.
This is about to change. Nasdaq and NYSE Arca plan to launch a 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET Overnight Session starting Sunday, December 6, 2026. Trading would then run from 9:00 p.m. Sunday to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with a one-hour pause each night. Weekends stay closed, and the existing pre-market session stays where it is. Those dates depend on the exchanges' final approvals and readiness, so check the exchanges' notices before relying on them.
