Florida A&M University is a public historically Black university in Tallahassee, Florida. It was founded in 1887 as a state school for Black students, when Florida offered no public higher education to them. Its later name changes and growth into a university followed the state's wider expansion of public higher education, and it is also a land-grant institution.
It's known for its law and pharmacy schools, its engineering and agricultural programs, and above all for the Marching 100 band, whose performances and traditions are a big part of campus life. Its teams are the Rattlers.
If you want the story in more depth, the university's own history pages and the work of historians of Florida's HBCUs are the places to start. Tell me which part interests you most, whether it's the founding years, the band, or its place in Tallahassee, and I'll dig into the record for it.
