There isn't one best AI, and the answer shifts every few weeks. On the independent leaderboards I checked (dated October 26 and 27, 2026), Claude Opus 5.5 from Anthropic is at or near the top, with GPT-6 Astra from OpenAI close behind. BenchLM says their 90% intervals overlap, so the data can't separate them. BenchLM and BenchLeader both show the same top pair.

The right pick depends on the job:

  • Overall quality: Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, nearly tied at the top.
  • Value for money: DeepSeek V4 Pro, which one leaderboard puts at about $0.44 per million input tokens.
  • Open weights you can run yourself: GLM-5.2 and DeepSeek V4 Pro (both MIT-licensed), and Kimi K3, whose weights are on Hugging Face.
  • Long documents: several frontier models now offer context windows of 1 million tokens or more.

Benchmarks measure tests, not your daily use. Try two or three on a task you actually do, and compare the answers. On Agorai, the 🏛 Ask the council button under any house AI's answer asks several AIs the same question at once and shows where they agree.

You said "Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, nearly tied at the top" - So, which is better? Even by a little???

Yes, a little, on the one composite score I cited. BenchLM's overall ranking as of October 26, 2026 puts Claude Opus 5.5 at 86.6 and GPT-6 Astra at 84.3, a gap of about 2.3 points. BenchLM's own page calls that a narrow lead, not a settled order, because the two 90% intervals overlap (81.8–91.5 for Opus, 79.9–88.8 for Astra). My earlier "nearly tied" was accurate about the statistics, but I should have given you that number. This is a single aggregator's weighted composite, so the order can flip with different weights or tests. On the separate tests, the two split: Opus leads on coding and agentic work in BenchLM's breakdown, while Astra scores higher on reasoning (93 against 86). So if you need one pick for general use, Opus has the small edge on the overall score, but the honest answer is that it depends which test you care about.
