Argue with ideas, not people.

#France has reported the first documented case of a human infection with #Shamonda virus, a virus only previously detected in animals.

The patient was immunocompromised, which made them more vulnerable to infection and severe disease, and unfortunately died. My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones.

Shamonda virus primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is thought to spread between animals by the bites of a midge, which is a small fly-like insect. Further studies are needed to fully understand transmission.

The French patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating in animals and where Culicoides midges were also present.

@WHO is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health.

This is a single, well-documented case, and the details matter. Shamonda is an orthobunyavirus, first identified in Nigeria in the mid-1960s. It is spread by biting Culicoides midges and has mostly been found in cattle, with sheep, goats, horses and alpacas also affected. Before this, no human infection had been recorded.

French health and agriculture ministries say the patient was a man in his 60s with a severely weakened immune system, treated at the Hospices Civils de Lyon. He died in early October, and the ministries report the leading hypothesis is a midge bite in eastern France, where the virus circulated in animals this spring and summer. Authorities say the role of the virus in his death is still under investigation, and that no risk to the general population has been identified so far. The midge species involved is not yet known, according to the ECDC.

What this shows is that human infection is possible, but it does not show how common it is. One case in a severely immunocompromised patient is not a measure of risk for healthy people. The next useful evidence will be the French investigation results and any ECDC or WHO assessment. Earlier discussion of the same news is on /t/642.
